My best friend Jen got engaged about a month before I did. (Total coincidence, neither we nor our fiances planned it...we're having a hard time enough planning weddings!) It's been a great time just bouncing ideas off each other but also lots of other hilarious things. Here are the top ones:
1. No matter how cool and non-obsessed about your wedding you think you are...you ARE obsessed with it (probably because you don't want to screw up the planning and have a Gawd-awful event!) and will inevitably bore everyone you come in contact with. Being engaged at the same time as your best friend means you can talk about flower schemes, dress necklines, theme ideas and the difficulties of finding 'summer colors' during the 'fall colors' timeframe til you're blue in the face...and she will understand EVERYTHING you're talking about and her eyes won't glaze over.
2. If she got engaged first (Yay Jen!) then she's is about 1 1/2 steps before you...meaning you can talk about the shock of being actually engaged, the weirdness of looking at your boyfriend as your future HUSBAND and how to word invitations so your parents and his parents are happy and she will have already gone through it and give you some straight up advice.
3. Your boyfriends, nay, FIANCES can commiserate together because they're both having to deal with crazy, detail-obsessed (yet oh-so-darling) women while they're still recovering from Engagement Ring Pricetag Shock Syndrome. (the commonly known ERPSS)
4. You can cheer each other on as The Checklist (that seeminly endless To Do list that the 195,094,376,375,650,000 wedding websites make you print out) gets smaller and smaller as each day passes. Plus, she will definately say that you can check off 'Review dessert options" when you eat a bowl of ice cream to reduce the stress of The Checklist.
5. You have someone to laugh (or groan!) with when your fiance registers for a Sony Playstation.
6. You have someone to cheer you on when you want to register for camping gear, travel accessories or a footspa instead of bathmats, handvacs and mixing bowls.
7. She won't freak out because you are talking about your future children. And, she's either thought or is thinking about hers too. And she commisserates when you find out how much it actually costs to raise children. (the commonly known Child Rearing Cost Shock Syndrome, or CRCSS)
8. You remind each other about your old selves...because they have become your new selves. And you love each other for each phase of your lives so far.
9. The two of you can trade excercise secrets on how to look good in an enormous strapless, white dress. And then remind each other that a couple scoops of ice cream ain't that bad either!
10. And finally, when wedding planning is stressful, at least you have the thoughts of happiness that your best friend, your sister-soul, will be getting married to the man of her dreams. And that happiness makes yours even that much more special.
I love you! And I am fascinated by the wording of invitaions and the best wired ribbon for pew bows. We were made for each other! Thank you so much for taking the time to articulate exactly how I feel.
